Take to the waterways

Just 3 miles downriver is the pretty village of Culmstock. Enjoy a walk along the old railway line by the river and you may even spot an otter. Then pop across for a thirst quenching pint at the Culm Valley Inn or have a spot of lunch in the village cafe. Further downstream you might like to visit Coldharbour Mill. This museum is also a rare example of a working woollen mill.

Just 12 miles away is the Tiverton Canal where you can drift past fields on a horse drawn barge.

Fancy fishing, golf or a ride on a steam train?

Maybe go trout fishing at Hollies Trout Farm where you can have your catch smoked.

Bring your clubs if you enjoy a round of golf. Pickeridge, Oake Manor and Otter Valley all offer golf to non members.

Enjoy a ride through open countryside on a steam train to the seaside town of Minehead. The West Somerset Railway offer lunch or dinner on board.

Visit surrounding towns

Sample the fresh Blackdown Hills foods. Many villages and local towns hold farmers markets, including Wellington (5 miles), a pretty country town with independent shops as well as banks and supermarkets, which includes a Waitrose. It has a traditional art deco cinema, which is licensed with plush seats and live theatre screenings.  Taunton (12 miles) is Somerset’s County Town and is also known for its museum and county cricket ground.

In Devon, Cullompton (14 miles) and Honiton (9 miles) have markets. Honiton is also famous for its history of lace making and antique shops. Tiverton (12 miles) lies on the River Exe and is a gateway to Exmoor.

A little further afield...

Climb up Glastonbury Tor and survey the Somerset Levels (15 miles). Pop over to Cheddar, gaze up at the gorge and pick up some cheese. Visit the Cathedral cities of Wells (45 miles) and Exeter (20 miles) both have outstanding museums, superior shops and a sense of history.

The donkey sanctuary near Sidmouth is within an hours drive and a must for animal lovers.

The Fleet Air Arm Museum at Yeovil, (32 miles) has Europe's largest Naval Aviation collection.

Savour the landscape and walk amidst the wild beauty of Exmoor and Dartmoor National Parks.

You can't forget the beaches
Head for the sunniest coast. You can check the forecast and either drop down to the South Coast to the pretty seaside villages of Beer or Branscombe (20 miles) where fishing boats can take you out to catch mackerel. Or go East for fossil hunting at Lyme Regis (26 miles) or West to enjoy the genteel regency town and formal cliff top gardens of Sidmouth (25 miles) A little further, but great for a sunny day, laze upon the two mile stretch of golden sand at Exmouth (31miles.) These resorts are all part of the recently designated Jurassic Coast, a World Heritage Site.

Or for the surf, take a trip up to the North Coast to the golden sand of Croyde Bay, Saunton or or the award winning Woolacombe beach (55 miles)

We are within easy reach of much of the South West Coastal Path as it meanders along the North coast of Devon and Somerset and along the South coast of Devon and Dorset.
